Chiggers – An Unseen Pest

Chigger Bug

Chigger season is in full swing, folks! If you’ve ever stepped foot into the great outdoors, odds are you have suffered at the hands (or teeth) of these little guys. Chiggers are a microscopic bug that are most active during the heat of summertime. They are typically found in tall grass and unmanicured lawns.

Chiggers bites usually occur on your ankles, waist, groin, or anywhere on your body that might have tight clothing or thinner skin. These little pests will explore your body before finding one of these areas to feed. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to see these bugs. Once they bite, they spit out an acid which is what causes the dreadful itching.

Chigger Bites

The itching will begin within 3 to 6 hours of the initial bite and will peak within 24 to 48 hours. However, itching can last up to a week for some people. Chigger bites look like red bumps, blisters or small hives that may get bigger over the next few days.

Your best defense against chiggers is to avoid them. If you have to venture into an area where they may be inhabiting, wearing long pants tucked into your boots is helpful in keeping the bugs on the outside of your clothing. Don’t sit on the grass and remove clothing immediately after exposure.

Chiggers are not as common in maintained environments. However, these pests may occasionally infest the area around your home.
